Directions to our
Base Camp

All participants are required to meet at the Champaign Canoeing Base Camp in Ossining, NY, unless directed to do otherwise. This procedure avoids complications if last minute river destination changes are required due to river levels or water release changes and assures that we get the right size PFD and paddle for you to use.

Our Location:
The Champaign Canoeing Base Camp is located in Ossining, NY, in Westchester county. We are just off US Route 9 about nine miles north of the Tappan Zee bridge. Alternate arrangements to get to our base camp on Saturday morning can be made by train. For our weekend trips, we will meet trip members at the Metro North, Hudson Division, train at: the CROTON-HARMON Railroad Station that arrives at about 7:25 am, (6:20 am departure from Grand Central Station in NYC), by prior special arrangements. From the New York City area:
Take any of the parkways or interstates north to route I-287. Go west on route I-287 and get off at exit 9, last exit before the Tappan Zee bridge. Go north on Route 9 about nine miles to Ossining. See Local Directions below.

From New Jersey:
Take either US Route 9W, the Garden State Parkway, or I-287 north to the NY State Thruway. Go east, (south), across the Tappan Zee bridge. Stay right in the toll booths. Exit right immediately after toll, exit 9, to US Route 9. Turn right at the end of the ramp onto Route 9 north go about nine miles to Ossining. See Local Directions below.

From New England:
Take I-84 west just past the NY/CT border to I-684 south. Go south on I-684 for ten miles to exit 6, Route 35. At the end of the ramp turn right on Route 35 west and proceed for one mile to the traffic light at Route 100. Turn left onto Route 100 south and go for about six miles past two more traffic lights and turn right on Route 134. Proceed on Route 134 for about four miles to a traffic light at Route 9A. Turn right onto Route 9A northbound and change to the left lane immediately for a left exit through the center divider onto Stormytown Road. Proceed on Stormytown Road about a mile to a 'T' intersection at Cedar Lane. Turn left onto Cedar Lane and go straight, past the next stop sign, to the bottom of the hill to a traffic light at Route 9 and turn right onto Route 9 north. That traffic light is the second of the double traffic lights referred to in Local Directions below.

From Upstate New York:
Take the NY State Thruway, I-87 south to exit 17, and take route I-84 east. Proceed east on I-84, for about ten miles, across the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge to exit 13, Route 9. At the bottom of the ramp, turn right onto Route 9 south. Proceed on Route 9 for about twenty-seven miles to Ossining. Now see Local Directions below.

Local Directions:
From US Route 9 northbound, proceed through the Village of Ossining. On the north side of town, just after you pass under a double set of traffic lights, the roadway goes from four-lanes to two-lanes. Turn left just after the motorcycle dealership and just before a former Citgo gas station onto Beach Road. The street sign is on South side of intersection. From US Route 9 southbound, proceed into Ossining past the large Avalon appartment complex on your right. In one hundred yards turn right just before the motorcycle dealership and just after a former Citgo gas station onto Beach Road. The street sign is on South side of intersection. It is a road even though the sidewalk was never removed and it looks like a driveway. We are the fourth house on the right, a light green house well off the road. The name 'LeClair' is on the silhouette of a red canoe hanging under the black mailbox.
